Read our extensive guide to the mahjong rules to get a detailed explanation on how to play mahjong. It contains the goal of the game, explanation about the tiles, what are valid moves, and when a game is finished.
The rules are fairly simple. Select two identical tiles to remove them from the play field. To select a tile, the tile must have either its right or its left side completely open, and there must not be any tiles on top of it, or even partially on top of it. Remove all the tiles to complete the game.
Most mahjong deals are winnable, and computer versions of mahjong ensure that each deal is winnable. But how do you make sure you finish each mahjong game? We collected several good tips and tricks on our mahjong strategy page. Keep these in mind while playing your next game of mahjong.
Mahjong solitaire is played with 144 tiles in a certain arrangement called a layout. The standard layout is referred to as 'The Turtle', 'The Pyramid' or 'The Dragon'. Brodie Lockard, the creator of the first computer version of mahjong solitaire in 1981, called this layout 'The Turtle'. The Shanghai Mahjong game released in 1986 by Activision described the layout as a "dragon-shaped pyramid".
In the meantime many more layouts have been invented and are being used in games, such as Fortress, Coliseum, Tarantula, Breakout, Chinese Wall, 3 Crowns, Cards-Clubs, Aqab's and Tree of Life. The Microsoft Mahjong game has over 50 layouts.
Popular mahjong games and variants
Mahjong games are a popular genre. There exist many versions of the regular mahjong solitaire game, such as Microsoft Mahjong, Mahjong Titans and Jolly Jong. But there are also a lot of variants that add a twist to the rules. For example Mahjong Dimensions is played in 3D, while making pairs in Mahjong Connect and Butterfly Kyodai is only allowed if the matched tiles can be joined by a path that has two or less turns.
There are too many mahjong variants to discuss them all on this page, so head over here to discover them all.
With the rise of the internet, many mahjong games have become available to play online. There are lots of websites where you can play mahjong online. It is more convenient to play mahjong solitaire online instead of with physical tiles, because the computer will do the shuffling and setup for you. Many online mahjong games will add twists to the rules.
Mahjong first developed in China as a multiplayer tile game during the 1800s. The mahjong solitaire games on our website use the same tiles as the original mahjong game, but with totally different rules. The first computer implementation of mahjong solitaire was released in 1981 by Brodie Lockard. Read all the details on our mahjong history page.
Mahjong name meaning
The name Mahjong is derived from 麻雀 (máquè), Chinese for 'sparrow'. The game was given this name because the sound of the tiles shuffling resembles the sound of sparrows. Discover more on our terminology page.
